Gatabaru raja maha viharaya is a beautiful historical site located in a scenic envirament among the rakwana range, sinharaja range, morawaka range. this gatabaru is about 1500 feet aabove sea level and is located about 2km from the kotapola area in the matara distrik. it also provide shade for a large buddha statue lying in a cave about thiry feet above the hill with a statue of arahath sariyuth at his feet and a statue of arahath mugalan bebeside his head. there is a rajjurubandara devalaya and a devalaya of visnu kataragama on either side of this buddha statue. according to the legends this temple has done a great service to the country. 

there for it's historical fact that it was built as a tribute to king 👑 walagambha during the reigh of king walagambha. who ruled the anuradhapura kingdom at the time. this place is known as a place of great beauty.As well as her place of great in influence. this place is a place of worship and a place of worship for many great interest and influence.there is also an annual procession held at this temple it is held in a grand manner and the possession lasts for seven days.
